Wherever we work, we study the local conditions that make a community unique, and seek out the stories of other communities to see how they have solved similar problems with innovative ideas.
Convening Community and Municipal Meetings
SLI begins work in any community by meeting key stakeholders. We understand what it takes to develop trust, how to engage community members, and how to conduct outreach. SLI begins by listening, while working to build understanding, develop relationships, identify priorities, and create a plan of action.
Developing Comprehensive Reports
SLI conducts policy analysis and influences planning and development practices through white papers, manuals, and research on the latest issues focusing on sustainable development.
Designing and Implementing Surveys
With extensive experience in collecting and processing community feedback, SLI understands the best methods to develop survey questions and mechanisms for gathering meaningful input, the times and places to collect that input, and how to interpret survey data.
Facilitating Interactive Public Participation
SLI works to record the energy and opinions of a community through visioning processes, focus groups, walking tours, and creative workshops. Our experts find methods to ensure a safe, engaging atmosphere with full participation to seek consensus and yield creative ideas. We analyze results to identify common themes, create a plan, and develop implementation strategies.
Advancing and Promoting Policy
We advocate policies that will revitalize emerging communities, protect open spaces and enhance our environment, provide a range of housing options, return vacant and abandoned properties to productive use, provide access to healthy, affordable food, and foster greater social equity for all Long Islanders.
Implementing Community Plans
To fulfill shared visions of a community, SLI works in partnership with community leaders and government officials to make visible changes materialize and to keep objectives in the public eye. We also help identify funding resources and connect projects with valuable resources.
Providing Resources and Technical Assistance
SLI is a comprehensive resource for information on the latest sustainability issues, events, and programs. Our staff provides guidance and technical expertise to achieve community goals and get projects done.
Disaster Recovery and Resiliency Planning
SLI helps connect communities with resources needed to respond, recover, and begin planning for the future. We bring together agencies and service providers – from volunteers to case management and housing resources. Working closely with all levels of government, we convene and facilitate the transition to planning for resiliency, addressing critical needs such as stormwater management and long-term planning.
