An up-and-coming community

In 2008 Sustainable Long Island led a Visioning Day as well as a number of education workshops for the community of Copiague.

Downtown Copiague is an up-and-coming community on Long Island and has been chosen by the Town of Babylon for revitalization. Sustainable Long Island, the RBA Group, Inc., and ERA, Inc., were hired by the Town to engage stakeholders in Copiague in a visioning process to determine the future development of the downtown.  The study area centers on the train station and extends along Great Neck Road from Dixon Avenue south to Scudder Avenue.

The Visioning Day in 2008 covered topics such as land use and suburban design, safety, transportation, and the local economy. Hundreds of community members participated to learn about the possibilities for redevelopment, potential for Copiague, and to express their goals and desires for the community.

The Vision Weekend was a huge success for the community. Residents and business owners of Copiague all had a chance to discuss what they wanted for the community and thanks to the attention and dedication of Town of Babylon Officials, their voice was heard. The goals for the visioning process included revitalization of the downtown area as a mixed use, transit-oriented district; exploring the redevelopment potential for the industrial areas around the train station;  strengthening economic opportunities in the downtown area; improving roadway safety and pedestrian accessibility; improving parking and traffic circulation; streetscape improvements; and enhancing the plaza area.

The plan for the community has now been completed by RBA Group, who partnered with Sustainable Long Island to work with the Downtown Copiague Implementation Committee.
