Sustainable Long Island Names L. Von Kuhen, Ph.D. Executive Director

Sustainable Long Island announces the appointment of L. Von Kuhen, Ph.D., as its Executive Director. The appointment is effective immediately.

“Von brings a wealth of experience, leadership, and innovation to Sustainable Long Island along with a profound sense of commitment to Long Island communities, and our region’s sustainability,” said Charlotte Biblow, Sustainable Long Island Board President. “On behalf of the Board of Directors, I am delighted to officially welcome Von as Executive Director and have great faith that he will endeavor to carry on Sustainable Long Island’s mission of advancing economic development, environmental health, and social equity.

Dr. Kuhen received his Ph.D. and his Master’s Degree in Anthropology from Stony Brook University. Prior to his graduate education, Dr. Kuhen received his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Virginia. While in Virginia, Dr. Kuhen mentored youth and worked as a housing rehabilitation volunteer in low income communities. Dr. Kuhen was previously Senior Vice President of the Community Development Corporation of Long Island.

Dr. Kuhen has been an active member of and has served a leadership role on the Board of Directors of several organizations, including the NeighborWorks® Alliance of New York, the Long Island Campaign for Affordable Rental Housing, the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless, and the Long Island Community Development Organization.

Dr. Kuhen has been involved with Sustainable Long Island since its beginnings, in 1998, participating in the group of activists and practitioners that developed the strategies and goals that became the organization’s founding principles. Throughout the process Dr. Kuhen shared his in-depth experience in economic development and community revitalization, environmental health and justice, and social equity.

Dr. Kuhen’s professional accomplishments include completing the Achieving Excellence in Community Development Program at Harvard University’s Kennedy School, and receiving Economic Development Finance Professional Certification from the National Development Council.

“I am honored to lead Sustainable Long Island,” said Dr. Kuhen. “Sustainable Long Island is a premier catalyst and facilitator for sustainable economic development, environmental health and social equity in Long Island communities.  We build collaboration and partnerships among diverse groups from all sectors, to better serve the needs of our communities. I look forward to expanding and renewing our commitment to working with local individuals and organizations, and working together to ensure continued health and vitality throughout this place we call home.”
