With over 20 volunteers from Nassau Educators Federal Credit Union (NEFCU) known as the NEFCU Cares Crew, Sustainable Long Island recently led a beautification effort at Teatro Yerbabruja Downtown Performing Arts Center; the site of previous community garden and raingarden builds.
With shovels, rakes, and paint brushes in hand, volunteers first cleaned, weeded, and replanted the community garden with broccoli, beets, and radishes. The community garden is often used to provide fresh produce to neighboring families.
The volunteers then cleared out accumulating debris from the raingarden so it could work more efficiently in reducing stormwater runoff.
Sustainable Long Island continued to clean the grounds at 63 Carleton Avenue in Central Islip by painting and repainting murals and stages on the property. The murals line the walkway at Teatro Yerbabruja and are enjoyed by community children who visit the center each week. The stages are used for a variety of performing arts acts that take place at the center throughout the year.
These beautification efforts enable current and future opportunities for environmental stewardship through educational programming and volunteer work. Sustainable Long Island looks forward to advancing similar environmental programs, as well as a continued partnership with NEFCU.
